Information Technology (IT) considered by a number of people as revolutionary has marred rapid development and diffusion in an increasing number of sectors particularly in the developed market economy countries. The services sector, which with few exceptions lagged behind other sectors in adopting technological innovations, has emerged as a major IT users. The characteristics of IT are especially attractive. It cuts the cost of information processing, speeds up data transmission, decreases size and increases reliability of equipment while enhancing the importance of software. The progress in mobility, interactivity and networking capabilities of IT have led to a number of advantages in the production and export of goods and services. More specifically, economies of scope, flexible production lines and greater customization of products are made possible through the application of the technology.

Information Technology systems also allow for interactivity, a time- and-labour saving procedure for tasks formerly rendered by human operators.

Enhancing efficiency has been the main objective behind the application of Information Technology. In addition to labour and time- saving, such applications have the potential to reduce stock lend and wastage, ensuring better coordination and flexibility in production along with adaptation of the quantity and quality of products of market trends.

The spread of information technology in industry has taken place more so in the production of engineering design services rather than construction implementation, although some progress has been made in automating construction methods that involve the traditional labour- intensive tasks of cutting and bending as well as electrical wiring a piping.
